The Lying and Prideful Wife

13 Wives in 13 Days...Wives of the Bible

Wife #3

This wife unfortunately followed her lying husband's lead.

She was too proud to say she held some money back as her and her man chose not to give the Apostles all the profits from their land.

She was hoping the Believers would think she was more spiritually mature than what she truly was.

So who is this woman?

Sapphira, wife of Ananias.

The Lying and Prideful Wife

But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property.  He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife's consent, he kept the rest.  Then Peter said, "Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.  The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren't lying to us but to God!"  As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified.  Then some young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and took him out and buried him.  About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.  Peter asked her, "Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?" "Yes," she replied, "that was the price."  And Peter said, "How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too."  Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.  Acts 5:1-10 (NLT)

What Not to Do According to the Life of Sapphira....

  • Don't follow your husband's lead when he is in sin.  Period!  As wives, we are to submit to our husbands but we're not to submit to their sins.
  • Don't lie to the Holy Spirit.
  • Don't try to prove to others that you're better or more spiritual than your really are.  Be humble and rest in the Lord's strength.  Others will appreciate your realness, and your husband will thank you for not competing and comparing yourself with others.  Just be you, and let the Lord grow you spiritually in His time.

What Sapphira Could Have Done....

  • She could have respectfully and graciously told her husband that she didn't want to lie to the Apostles.  If her husband wanted to deceive them, then that was his choice and his sin.
  • She could have been content with where she was in her spiritual growth.  Resting in her relationship with Christ would help her not need the approval or praises from others.

Challenge for Today

Be honorable and truthful to your husband.  Your integrity may actually rub off on him if his character needs to grow in this area.  Remember, you are a wife of influence.  Spur him on towards righteousness.
