The Wife Who Didn't Nag, But Could Have

13 Wives in 13 Days...Wives of the Bible Series

Wife #8

Her spirit was disturbed.

She knew something wasn't right.

She shared her thoughts and concerns with her man but he didn't heed her concern and warning.

So who is she?

She's Pontius Pilate's Wife.

The Wife Who Didn't Nag, But Could Have

Definition of nagging:
1. To annoy by constant scolding, complaining, or urging.
2. To torment persistently, as with anxiety or pain.

If you happen to have a 2 yr. old child then you probably know what nagging looks like...
Mommy, can I have this?
Can I Mommy?
Can I?
When can I have it Mommy?

Nagging can wear on any mother's nerves.

Now apply this same premise to your marriage when you ask your man to take out the trash.  How many times do you ask him?  More than once?

Well, Pontius Pilate's wife was not a known nag.  She mentioned something to her husband just once.

While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."  Matthew 27:19

Here's something you'll find interesting...

Mrs. P was not a follower of Jesus, however, she knew something wasn't right about crucifying Christ.  Her spirit stirred within her.  This wife was more discerning than her husband, yet she was still respectful towards her man.

What to Do According to Pontius Pilate's Wife...

  • She told her husband what was on her heart and then she let it go.  She didn't bring it up again.  If he didn't heed what she said or asked, the consequences were on him.
  • Her spiritual understanding was deeper than his, however, this did not give her license to parent, I'm mean nag him.  So if you're married to a man that's an unbeliever or barely believing, just because you're more spiritually mature than he is, you still don't want to nag him because it's annoying.  Remember the 2 yr. old analogy?  You'll lose the good influence you have over him.  If you're like a constant dripping faucet, he'll tune you out.

Challenge for Today

  • Let things go with your man.  Don't ask him more than once whatever it is that's eating at you. If you've asked him to take out the trash and he hasn't, then let it spill on to the floor.  All you neat freaks, perfectionists, and control-freaks will have a really hard time with this one.  Why do I know this?  Because I'm in recovery in all those areas!

The Dangers of Nagging

Nagging your husband will not draw him closer to you, rather it will push him away.  And when you've pushed your man away it'll be harder for you to influence him.

  1. I agree with almost everything you said, its a very good reminder of just one more way we can show our man some respect. Just one thing, if I ask him to take the gar age out just once but he doesn't do right away, it won't get done, he'll forget very quickly and I have to Demi d him, but I have learned how to remind without nagging :)
