The Worldly Wife

13 Wives in 13 Days...The Wives of the Bible Series

Wife # 4

This wife makes me sad.

She lived in a desirable land.  Very luxurious.  Yet, also very wicked.

God had a much better plan for her life than what she was capable of seeing.

The Lord was leading her and her family to a new place, but she didn't care.

She wasn't willing to let go of her current lifestyle.

She longed for it as she looked back....

So who is this wife?

She's Lot's Wife

The Worldly Wife

Lot moved his tents to a place near Sodom and settled among the cities of the plain.  But the people of this area were extremely wicked and constantly sinned against the LORD. Genesis 13:12,13 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished."  When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them.  As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, "Flee for your lives! Don't look back, and don't stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!"  Genesis 19:15-17
Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah--from the LORD out of the heavens.  Genesis 19:24
But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.  Genesis 19:26

I just wrote about a similar woman (true story) who faced the loss of what she once knew, and instead of trusting in God, she made the decision to go outside of His will when she left her husband and child.

Money and possessions are two things that we're always going to battle.  Our fleshly desires scream, "I want it!" Or we fear the future. If we continually turn to our flesh, a.k.a, our emotions and feelings,  it will rob us of our joy and cause us to bicker with our husband.  Or we can learn to be still as we trust in the Great I Am to provide for all our needs.

What Not to Do According to Lot's Wife...

  • Don't become so consumed with your current lifestyle that you're not willing to follow the Lord where ever He sends you.  Remember, this place on earth is just your temporary home.
  • Don't place a higher emphasis on money over your husband and family.  Be mindful of this thought-process when the arguments start to break out.
  • If and when God moves you, don't look back...you just might turn into a pillar of salt!

Challenge for Today

If financial concerns are weighing down your wedded union, keep this perspective:
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Matthew 6:21

Treasure your marriage more then your possessions.  Let your man know you'd follow him to a Soup Kitchen if you had to!  If you want to read more on Marriage and Finances, you can read my prior series on this topic right here.
